Karen Hyder serves as moderator coach for The eLearning Guild’s Online Forum Series
Synchronous training expert will coach speakers and will host monthly events in 2004. The eLearning Guild Online Forum Series Schedule
(Palmyra, N.Y., Jan. 3, 2004) – Karen Hyder, managing director of Kaleidoscope Training and Consulting, a firm specializing in developing communication and delivery skills for classroom and online trainers , will moderate a new series of online conference events for The eLearning Guild beginning February 12, 2004.
Each event, scheduled the second Thursday of the month, will focus on one eLearning theme from the perspective of four different practitioners, authors and industry leaders offering different views and strategies. Event days begin at 10:45 am with an introduction to the day and to the software interface led by Hyder. Sessions run for 75-minutes each with breaks in between. The event ends at 6:15pm ET with wrap up and conclusion also led by Hyder. All of the sessions are recorded.
“This isn’t your father’s conference series; we’re using a state-of-the-art synchronous online interface to host participants from around the world without travel or, thanks to the Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology, without long distance calls. We’re showcasing the work and the ideas of eLearning professionals who are on the cutting edge and can share their stories and strategies with us without leaving the office. This is the kind of program many of us have been a long time to enjoy. Learners are sitting at their own desks, ready to immediately apply what they are learning. I call that economy!”
Were using Elluminate Live! for our online interface to provide the software tools and a place on the web to share visuals and audio with a large group of people in real time. Elluminate is similar to products like WebEX, Centra, PlaceWare / Live Meeting, Breeze and InterWise.
Speakers and participants log into the same secure website where they are able to show and view PowerPoint slides or any running application, they can draw on a whiteboard, click emoticon buttons like Smiley face or Thumbs down to convey their response to a question or reaction to a statement. Participants can type messages to the speaker or to each other as in Instant Messenger and can hear audio through the PC speakers and talk using a PC microphone using rather than phone.
“eLearners and their organizations are realizing that a lot of what we miss when learning online is our relationship with like-minded people.” Hyder adds “Having a diverse group learning, thinking and talking about the same subject at the same time is pretty powerful.
“We’re very excited to be setting an example for the Guild’s 10,000 members to show how synchronous online communication can be done well.” says Hyder. “I’m eager to hear the feedback from our participants about what works, and what we can do to improve. It’ll be an excellent learning opportunity for everyone!”
